It’s over. The holidays are really over. They have come and gone and now Ronen is expected to take things at work seriously again. We would like to remind our readers that the word “expected” is the key word here. It’s not that Ronen doesn’t take his one true love, technology , seriously. Its just when she is dressed in forms, emails, and budget cuts, that Ronen gets turned off. The High Holidays were great. Us Jew’s just celebrated Sukkos , or what Ronen’s gentile friends call the Feast of Tabernacles . One of the biggest highlights of the holiday are the numerous Simhas Beis Hashoeva events, basically festive gatherings aimed at reliving the happines that was in the Holy Temple , may it be rebuilt speedily in our times. As our wise rabbis have stated, he who never saw the happines in the Temple never saw happines in his days. They know what they are talking about. Take it from from Ronen , who once thought he could say he’d seen everything when he personally spent 2 nights roaming around east LA during the Rodney King riots. Posted by Wordmobi Ronen gives consultation on how to safely connect companies to each other.Ronen is invited to a meeting in which a large enterprise class company is looking to consolidate, or absorb a daughter company in order to streamline, create synergy ( Ronen always gets the chills when he says that 4 letter word), and save expenses. Of course, information security is important since most often connections are made between the networks in an insecure manner, many times even without the use of firewalls . As Ronen read over 10 years ago in the first edition of hacking exposed, hackers are on the lookout for companies that acquire other companies. Top management is in a rush to connect and rarely take network security into consideration. The hackers “leapfrog” from network to network. Posted by Wordmobi Ronen attends meeting on secure code. One of the largest, if not the largest IT companies in Israel, has approached Ronen on how to get their programmers to produce secure code. Ronen prefers to call it “creating a culture of writing code securely.” It is very important to write code securely. According to Ronen, it does not matter how many firewalls , IDS/IPS , or application firewalls you put in front of your application, if the code is not secure, it’s not secure and you are vulnerable. At the meeting there was a lot of talk. Right away Ronen could spot the different parties/individuals involved. The managers who have nothing to do but cause trouble. The lead programmers who run a tight ship on an even tighter budget. And then there were the seccurity adminisrrators , bored out of their minds and with very little to say. Not because they dont understand what is going on, many of them have worked with Ronen in the past, but because they know that this meeting is a lot of talk and that in the end the company is not going to invest the money and manpower needed to get over 1000 programmers to write their code securely. See ya Posted by Wordmobi Ronen discovers a service request has been opened in his name. The other day, while walking to prayers, Ronen recieved an email on his e71. The email was from firewall developer Checkpoint and stated that Ronen had opened up a service request. As anyone else who works in information security , Ronen got suspicious. Only Ronen has access to the Checkpoint support account and Ronen certainly did not open a request that morning. Well, as anyone else severely disgruntled with his employer, Ronen decides that the subject can wait till after the holidays. Happy Holidays! Ronen shows up at department new year toast. This past week the head of the technologies department invited all her workers for a new year toast, Ronen included. This time instead of cakes and chips the secretaries ganged up and ordered fruits and vegetables. After all the cucumbers were consumed and all the plums cheeringly plummeting down to our bellies, it was time for Ronen to get back to work.
Look how stuffed up with people the room is. I am going to suggest they put proxemics, the study of personal space, on the course syllabus this year. L8r Posted by Wordmobi Ronen goes shopping with his son Yonatan. Its Friday after 10 AM. I woke up late, and am not in the mood to go shopping for food for the Sabbath, in one of Israel’s overcrowded shopping malls. Since my son is comming along, I am having a nice time. Only now I see he dirtied his daiper, better get home fast so his mother can change him. Goos Shabbos Posted by Wordmobi The daughter of Ronen is still not sleeping. After a long day at work and running erands, like taking one of the boys to the dentist, Ronen finnaly gets home and is looking forward to some quiet time. “Your still not sleeping?!” Ronen suprisingly points out to his daughter. All she has to do is smile.
Good night! Posted by Wordmobi Ronen’s AquariumAs a hobbie, Ronen raises African cichlids in a 80 gallon aquariumOne of things Ronen enjoys most is to sit and watch fish swimming around in a tank. Even when he goes to the Jerusalem shopping mall, Ronen always make sure to stop by the pet shop so he can take a loock at the fish.
Ronen chose to keep African cichlids since they are very hardy and are easier to take care of. He used to have 2 giant arowanas untill he cooked them up at a bar-b-que.
